Football

When Santa Fe Christian's Delaware wing-T offense is clicking, the Eagles are pretty tough to stop.

The ground-oriented scheme developed nearly a century ago that inspired the "Wildcat" offense that these days is all the rage in the NFL requires precise execution to be effective at any level.

The Eagles for a third straight week ran it to perfection in a 42-6 shellacking of Monte Vista of Spring Valley in a nonleague game on Sept. 19.

The Eagles improved to 3-0 overall for the season, outscoring their opponents by a combined 147-34.

Sam Hoekstra rushed for 134 yards on eight carries, highlighted by a 97-yard scoring run to lead the rout.

Eagles quarterback Keaton Giannotti attempted just three passes - one for a touchdown - but did plenty of work with his feet, rushing for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

Trent Von Yokes rushed for 89 yards on seven carries highlighted by a 52-yard scoring run, and Kurt Luedtke rushed for 62 yards on two carries, scoring on a 55-yard yarder.

Joshua Estill led the Eagles defensively with 12 tackles, and Travis Berglund contributed 10 tackles.

Cathedral Catholic again asserted itself as one of the area's most dominant programs as the Dons trounced Helix of La Mesa 42-19 in a nonleague game on Sept. 18.

The Dons improved to 3-0 overall for the season as they won for the 24th consecutive time - a streak that goes back to 2007.

Jonny Martin led the Dons, rushing for 257 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries.

Martin's 48-yard scoring run in the first quarter set the tone for the Dons. He also scored on runs from the 12 and the 8.

Dons quarterback Max Brewer completed 11 of 18 attempts for 154 yards with two touchdowns.

He completed a 23-yard scoring pass to Derek Thomas and a 20-yarder to Chance Early, both in the second quarter that helped the Dons stretch their lead to 28-0.

Two weeks into their first season of life after eight-man football, San Diego Jewish Academy has yet to allow a point.

For a second straight week, the Lions defense figured prominently in a 38-0 crushing, this one against Calvary Christian Academy in a nonleague game on Sept. 17.

The Lions have outscored their first two opponents to start the season by a combined 105 points.

Jordan Sharf and Joseph Mizrachi combined for five touchdowns to lead the Lions.

Sharf rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries, and Mizrachi rushed for 103 yards and one touchdown on eight carries and was 9 for 12 passing for 95 yards and one touchdown.

Linebacker Ricky Pemensky led the Lions defensively with seven tackles and three sacks.

Torrey Pines started strong but couldn't finish in a 13-9 loss to Rancho Bernardo in a nonleague game on Sept. 18.

The Falcons took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter when Kevin Cuff returned an interception for 47 yards for a touchdown and extended the lead to 9-0 going on Blake Busse's 42-yard field goal.

The Falcons fell to 0-3 overall for the season.

Volleyball

Torrey Pines is off to a 3-0 start after a decisive 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-16) nonleague victory over Poway on Sept. 17.

Canyon Crest Academy opened its season with a hard-fought 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-12, 25-14) nonleague victory over San Marcos on Sept. 15.

Samantha Cash had 15 kills to lead the Ravens, and Delaney Sullivan had 13 kills.

Katie McAllister added six kills for the Ravens.

Cross country

Torrey Pines standout Megan Morgan shined at the Mt. Carmel Invitational, taking first place in the Div. I girls' seniors heat on Sept. 19 at Morley Field.

Morgan had little company as she reached the finish line of the 2.7-mile course in 14:55.

Ali Billmeyer finished second for the Falcons in the Div. I juniors heat, clocking a 15:51, and Ashlyn Dadkhah (15:57) placed second in the sophomore race.

Cathedral Catholic's Caitlin Krol (16:25) took first place in the Div. II girls' sophomore race, and Kelly Bieraugel (17:36) took third in the freshmen heat.

Water polo

Canyon Crest Academy defeated Ramona 10-7 in a Western League opener for both teams on Sept. 17.

Grant Jurgensen scored four goals to lead the Ravens, and Jordan Warburg added one goal and four assists.

The Ravens improved their overall record for the season to 1-2.

Golf

Torrey Pines remains unbeaten through four matches after defeating Carlsbad 197-209 in a nonleague match on Sept. 14 on a nine-hole, par-37 course at La Costa Resort & Spa.
